While there are a lot of “well, duh” methods to marketing oneself on the Internet, there are also some not-so-obvious and extremely effective ways to cultivate your brand online. KISSmetrics provides some very informative (and free) guides to digital marketing that no one would be worse off for reading. I personally found them to be enormously valuable.
As someone with a profile on most of the social media sites outlined in these guides, it was interesting to see how they could be utilized from a business angle. While there were of course many differences between each marketing strategy, there were many similarities as well. The main lesson that pervaded each of the social media guides was the importance of ones AUDIENCE! From Twitter to Quora and everything in between, the significance of finding and targeting ones audience did not go unnoticed. In the business world, ones audience is also ones potential consumer/client base and therefore also ones bottom dollar. This awesome Infographic provides more more information on the importance of cultivating one’s fanbase.
Almost all the platforms offer paid advertising options for marketers, Facebook’s being the most targeted. As a Facebook user, I’ll admit it is kind of unnerving how specific the ads can get, but from a marketing perspective it’s ingenious. Ads can be created and targeted at specific demographics such as age range, region, and even favourite sports team. Similar options are available on LinkedIn. The more specific, the better. On other social media platforms, such as Reddit, you can make yourself more visible by purchasing ad space, which will automatically bump your post to the front page, and as we know visibility is everything when it comes to the Internet.
While paid advertising is a great option, there is something to be said of earning ones visibility. Luckily, the social media platforms available today offer many great ways to do this successfully. Details on how to best utilize each of these platforms individually are outlined in the marketing guides. At the core of each of them, however, success comes from active engagement. Your potential audience needs an excuse to come to you, and based on your product or service it is your job to determine how best to achieve this. All of the primary social media platforms make this a more than realizable goal; the key is knowing how to effectively use them.
As competition is consistently growing so now is the time to tap into these plentiful resources and reap that sweet sweet karma!
